If you’re trying to set up a new email account or test out a new client, you may be asked for details of your SMTP server. So what exactly is this, and what does it do? Well, SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, and it’s responsible for sending your messages from one place to another.
In this article, we’ll explain where you can find the details you’ll most likely need, like your SMTP server name and address. Don’t worry – we’ve created step-by-step guides for both Windows and Mac, so you’re covered whichever operating system you prefer. Without further ado, let’s jump right in.
Microsoft Outlook
Start by opening Microsoft Outlook. See the toolbar at the top? Click File, then select Account Settings. You’ll see a list of your accounts – click the one you need information for. There should be a heading called Server Information. Look below this to find both your incoming and outgoing SMTP server names.
Need the port numbers too? Just click More Settings, then Advanced.
Apple Mail
Go to the Mac toolbar and choose the Mail option. From here, click on Preferences and choose the appropriate email account from the list on the left. There should be three tabs at the top of the window; we’re going to click on Account Information.
You can find your SMTP server name and port under the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) heading.
Android Email Client
Go to your phone or tablet’s Settings menu and scroll down until you find the Email option. Tap it, and choose your email address. Next, look for the Server Settings option underneath the Advanced Settings heading. You should now see both your IMAP and SMTP server address, name, and the ports they use.
Apple Mail for iPhone
Finding this information on an iPhone is ultra-simple. Just go to your Settings menu and find Mail. From here, tap Accounts, then choose your main email account. Look for an option labeled IMAP. Once you’ve selected it, you should see your IMAP and SMTP information.
