How To Set An Alarm On MacBook

how to set an alarm on mac

Hey, we’ve all been there: you’re working on your MacBook and lose track of time. Maybe you’re crunching the numbers and trying to meet your monthly targets, or maybe you’re just engrossed in the new game you’ve been playing. Whatever the case, you can set an alarm to help keep yourself on schedule. Best of all, it’s incredibly simple to do: just follow the steps below.

Step 1 – Consider a Dedicated App

The default alarm clock built into Mac OS X Mavericks is fine, but a little barebones. You might want to take a look at the App Store and see if there’s a more advanced alarm clock that would suit your needs better. These offer all kinds of functionality, like periodic alarms, social-media blocking, and so on.

Step 2 – Open the Calendar App

Take a look at your Dock. You should see the Calendar icon: go ahead and click it. If it’s not there, you can get started by opening the menu, browsing to Applications, and choosing Calendar.

Step 3 – Choose a Date and Time

Chances are you’ll either want the alarm sometime today or tomorrow. Double-click on the relevant day and type in a name for your new event. Next, enter the time you want the alarm to go off in the From field. The To field is irrelevant unless you want to be forced to manually turn the noise off.

Step 4 – Adding Sound

You’ll see a menu labeled Alert. Enter it, and choose the Custom option. From here, click on Message With Sound. You can now choose an alarm noise from a list of pre-installed sounds, or choose Open File to use one of your own. This is great for people who like to wake up to music.

Now, go to the final drop-down menu. You’re looking for an option named At the Time of Event. Once you’re done, just click OK. Congratulations – you’ve just set your first alarm.

Summary

It might not be the most intuitive way of doing things, but by following the steps above, you can absolutely set an alarm with the default Mac OS X apps. On the other hand, there’s no excuse for being late anymore, so you’ll have to find another convenient reason as to why you’re late for work or school.
